How to switch to polyphasic mode
During your first solo races, the switch from monophasic to polyphasic sleep can be very hard. It can take up to 3-4 day of adaptation, this effectively means that for shorter races you never even get to see the benefits. During longer races on the other hand, after the third or fourth day we will notice that our body has adapted. We no longer feel the same impulse for sleep as direct correlation with day and night.

I would very much like to know how you will be modifying Frank to comply with Category Zero Offshore requirements of the GSC NOR. I’ve been having an email exchange with Marco, of GSC management, as to how one does that on a boat not specifically designed to race. I am at a loss as to how one can do so practically, if at all. It is my understanding that even the Class 40 boats are challenged to comply. Can we communicate on this? My email address is below. Thank you in advance for your response.
Hi Ronald. So sorry for the terribly late response. I think we traded emails
I have to confess that I entered early on the understanding that it was an “everyman” all-comers event. I have nothing negative to say about the setup, but I love my boat, so no way would I contemplate undertaking the CAT 0 requirements. As things evolved, the GSC (I felt) evolved into a mainstream pro-am event. The focus on safety is a driver for people to spend $250k or so for a boat that’s only useful for RTW events. I read this week of a couple of participants who “won’t be allowed to participate” if they are late starting. That’s problematic. Disqualified – fine. But anyone who has come that far is just going to keep on sailing, right? I did suggest to Marco that there could be a separate category for “the rest of us”, but it’s his event. Well done Marco for getting it going! I’ll do it solo next year (I hope). After all, I’d not expect my 5-7 kt Sadler to win anyway. I just want to go RTW solo! Maybe we need a RTW for “the rest of us”. And I’m not expecting to be rescued if I get into trouble. There’s a tide in the affairs of men…
